Rainwater For Your Pond?

People often ask us if harvested rainwater is safe for water features such as koi ponds, waterfalls and permaculture systems. The short answer is "yes!", and the good news is you won't need to add chemicals to remove chlorine anymore. However you may need to add some filtration to reduce contaminates, depending on your system. A simple sand filter can reduce or eliminate many of the larger organisms that could be present in your storage tank. The addition of a UV light source will destroy micro organisms that are too small to capture in most instances.

Check out our pond and waterfall in the video below. We have a standpipe style roof washer to clean up the water before storage. From our tanks we have run a permanent underground line for filling the pond with ease. Our only filter is the one on the pump running the waterfall, and this seems to work great for such a small pond.

You can certainly save quite a bit of your municipal water supply be topping up your water feature with harvested rainwater. I spent about five or ten dollars adding the permanent line, which has saved me so much time and energy it is hard to put a value on it!
